THIS WEEK AHEAD
Earnings, Economic Data, and The Great Rotation...
This week’s earnings calendar is smaller due to the holiday shortened week, but still features several important corporate reports that will provide insight into both cyclical and defensive parts of the economy. The U.S. markets are closed Monday, February 16 for Presidents Day, so the first meaningful reports begin Tuesday. DTE Energy is expected to report slightly improved earnings tied to commercial demand and data-center expansion in its service territory. Together with DTE, companies such as Builders FirstSource and Medtronic will offer perspective on housing-related construction activity and global healthcare demand, respectively. Wednesday has a much fuller schedule with companies like Booking Holdings, a bellwether for online travel, Analog Devices, which will shed light on industrial and automotive semiconductor demand, and Garmin, a GPS/fitness/aviation product maker that is sensitive to consumer electronics cycles. Thursday brings earnings from Deere & Company, where investors will focus on how the ag-equipment downturn is impacting sales and inventory trends, and Walmart, which after a strong holiday season may provide broader clues on consumer resilience and pricing power. The week wraps with a lighter schedule on Friday with smaller caps like Balchem and Hudbay Minerals reporting. Overall, this mix spans energy utilities, travel, semiconductors, consumer retail and industrial machinery, offering a cross-section of company performance heading into Q1.
Economic data this week is highlighted by a couple of key indicators that help flesh out growth and inflation trends in the absence of Monday’s releases due to the holiday. Tuesday brings the Empire State Manufacturing Index and the NAHB Housing Market Index, which offer near-real-time sentiment on factory activity and builder confidence amid ongoing rate pressures. Over the midweek period, investors are parsing speeches from Fed officials for subtle clues on monetary policy direction after recent rate pauses. Thursday is the most data-heavy with the Advance Report on Durable Goods Orders, Building Permits and Housing Starts for December, and the Advance Goods Trade Balance will provide vital information on capital spending trends, residential construction activity, and U.S. trade flows. Durable goods, in particular, is a proxy for business investment momentum. Friday will be a big day with GDP being released along with the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge; The PCE Price Index. This data point could be a final indicator on if and when rate cuts will be deployed. With the Fed’s minutes from its January meeting already parsed by markets, these fresh indicators will help refine expectations for growth and policy as 2026 progresses.
